ESU vs Bloomsburg University 9/18/04

The first half started out slow with a lot of penalties and infractions on both teams. ESU was playing with a few key players missing but the replacements came in and stepped up to the level they needed to be at. ESU was playing together for the first time as a team in the fall and it took a while for the team to click. ESU forwards were a little undersized compared to the Bloomsburg pack and it showed in scrum downs and in open field rucking but they dominated in lineouts and used their speed to their advantage pouching a few balls at tackles. Bloomsburg was on the scoreboard first when our inside centre fell and the Bloomsburg back walked into the try zone. They would miss the conversion kick which would eventually hurt them in the long run. ESU would not take long to respond with a score of their own. Ian young placed some great balls into touch off of penalty kicks to give us good field position. Then smart play with a good pick and pass from Joe Morgello to Rookie Chris Zduniak from 10 meters ran through defenders and into the try zone. Ian young with great kicking all day converted on the try. The half would end with ESU leading 7-5.

 

The 2nd half was a smoother, cleaner half of play. ESU was moving the ball down the field towards the Bloomsburg try with good set pieces and a few penalties by Bloomsburg. ESU forwards started to ruck better on their own ball and got it close to the try line where Joe Morgello where pick and dive between two defenders for his first try of the season. ESU was up 14-5 but Bloomsburg would come back during the half and make the game 14-12.  ESU final try would be scored by Joe Sprovkin finding a good hole in the Bloomsburg backline and taking it in. Bloomsburg would then come back with their own try with one of their big backs running it in. Again, the Bloomsburg kicker would miss the conversion kick making the score 21- 17. The final 20 minutes of the game would remain scoreless with good defense on both sides and a lot of heart from the ESU rugby team stopping them on a few occasions close to their own try zone. Some key Rookies stepped up in the game such as Walter Rada, Jared Roe, and Ryan Cunningham.
